Small Illinois Community Will be Without School

Edgewood Grade School is set to close at the end of the school year

A small southern Illinois village will be without a school for the first time since 1863.

Edgewood Grade School is set to close at the end of the school year because of falling enrollment and state aid.

Edgewood is about 15 miles southwest of Effingham and has 440 residents. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, the school has about 69 students in kindergarten through 4th grade.

Parents and alumni called the closure of the elementary school "sad" during a weekend reunion that was held to bring together members of the community.

Greg Ingram attended Edgewood in the 1970s and said the closure will "hurt the town."

He worries parents will move so their children can be closer to other schools.
