Barge Sinks in Chicago River

A construction barge began sinking in the Chicago River near Wolf Point on Friday afternoon.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit responded to the 100 block of North Riverside at 12:35 p.m. for reports of a sinking barge, police News Affairs Officer Ana Pacheco said.

Officials said the barge "broke free from its mooring."

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Officials initially said the Chicago River would be closed between the Lake and Randolph street bridges from 6 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday, but the Coast Guard later said the river would be open while the owners of the barge decide on a salvage plan.
