Single Mom “Scared and Angry” By Racist Graffiti

Swastika, racist words tagged on garage

The moment Latricia Deanes saw the Nazi swastika and words, "Go home niggers," on her garage door, she said she felt sick.

"You try to raise your kids where they're not racist. It's hard because actions speak louder than words," said the black single mother of three who rents her home in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

Tuesday's graffiti has been painted over by Deanes landlord and was one of two garages tagged with racist words.

"It's probably kid stuff. We don't see a lot of [graffiti] out here," Morgan Park District police Sgt. Dennis Kettering said about the isolated incident.

Deanes lives in the predominantly white Mount Greenwhood neighborhood with her three children, ages 13, 11 and 9.

"I'm trying to teach my kids that it's one bad apple that spoiled the bunch, but don't think that everyone is like that. Don't think you're better than them," Deanes said.

Meanwhile, she is "scared and angry."

"You're scared because you can take care of yourself, but what about your kids? You're angry because I didn't choose what color I am. They didn't choose their color. How do you judge me because of my color? It's like, 'How can you do this to me? You don't know me,'" Deanes said.
