Illinois Senate votes to make electronic nude photo sharing a misdeamenor
There could be trouble down the road for teens who go naked on the Internet.
We know we can't talk on a cell phone while driving in Chicago, and texting at the wheel is a definate no-no.
Now, the Illinois State Senate has unanimously voted to pass a bill that would make "sexting" illegal.
"Sexting" involves sending an electronic nude photo without the permission of the subject in the photo, and it was deemed a Class A misdemeanor in the Senate on Thursday, according to the Illinois Radio Network. Getting caught sharing such an image could get the offender up to a year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood), says that too many kids are getting caught with their pants down, so to speak. They send a picture meant for one person, only and find that it ends up on the Internet.
Lightfoot hopes the new legislation will stop photo recipients from trying to intimidate the sender by sharing nude or compromising pictures on the World Wide Web (emphasis on World).
The bill passed by the Senate was a "tightened up version" of one that passed through the House, the IRN reported. For that reason, the House has to vote on the bill again before it can be ratified.
