Semi Carrying 23K Pounds of Sporting Goods Overturns on Dan Ryan Expressway Causing Major Traffic Delays

A semi carrying 23,000 pounds of sporting goods crashed on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway at the Chicago Skyway Wednesday morning, spilling sporting materials and leaking fuel onto the roadway, authorities said.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the trailer of a semi broke when the driver struck a cement guard rail overnight, turning the vehicle onto its side. Diesel fuel was leaking from the vehicle and sporting goods spilled onto the roadway.

No injuries were reported as of 5:30 a.m.

Two outbound lanes and the ramp to the Skyway were shut down as officials called a Hazmat situation around 1:30 a.m. For more than four hours the expressway was limited to one lane and the ramp to the Skyway remained blocked.

All lanes and the ramp to the Skyway were reopened just before 7 a.m.

Traffic, including trucks, was being allowed onto express lanes to bypass the closures. Delays were also reported on the inbound lanes.
