Second Phase of Kennedy Closures Begins

Outbound Kennedy to close from Grand to Ogden

The second phase of Kennedy Expressway construction, expected to cause major delays and detours, began Friday night and will last through the weekend.

This time around, the outbound Kennedy from Grand Avenue to Ogden will close for the removal of the second part of the bridge. Two lanes will be diverted onto the eastbound Ohio ramp to Orleans Street.

Entrance ramps to Jackson, Adams, Madison and Randolph, as well as the westbound Congress to westbound Kennedy entrance ramp, also will be closed. Closures are expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday.

"This particular weekend is going to be pretty different than last weekend in terms of the diversion," IDOT spokeswoman Jae Miller said.

Officials say the project is ahead of schedule and could wrap this weekend. Crews will still have to reconstruct the bridge, but that will be accomplished through intermittent night closures through the end of October.

IDOT encourages the use of Metra, CTA, and any of the alternate routes.
