$2M Bail For Second Suspect Charged in Murder, Robbery of Elderly Man

A second man charged in the murder and robbery of an 88-year-old Chicago man was ordered held Wednesday on $2 million bail.

Clarence Sams, 24, of the 9200 block of South Dobson Avenue was charged this week with felony counts of first-degree murder and robbery. Police said he was identified as the person who approached Arthur Hearn, knocked him to the ground and went through his pockets.

Hearn was attacked and robbed just before 5 a.m. on Sept. 25 near a bus stop in the 8500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, police said.

He was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition with head trauma and was pronounced dead several days later.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Hearn died of head injuries due to an assault and his death was ruled a homicide.

The first suspect, 29-year-old Samuel Higgins of the 900 block of East 84th Street, was charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of robbery, police said Saturday. He was ordered held on $1 million bail.

Police initially said Hearn was knocked to the ground by a man who then went through his pockets while a woman stood watch.
