School Principal Resigns After Sexting Scandal

Deer Path Middle School principal John Steinert resigns after sexting charges become public

A middle school principal from north suburban Lake Forest resigned on Sunday, several years after a sexting scandal.

John Steinert, the principal at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest for four years, is accused of using his work-issued cell phone to send vulgar text messages and a picture of his genitals to a 22-year-old college student back in 2008.

In 2009, the student filed a complained, and Steinert pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment of electronic equipment.

The Lake Forest District 67 School Board did not fire him then but disciplined him by ordering him to go to counseling and temporarily freezing his salary.

After re-examining the case, a North Shore School Superintendent planned to ask the school board Sunday to fire Steinert. Dr. Harry Griffith said he reached his conclusion after new information surfaced last week about the married father of four and his 2009 guilty plea to harassment by communication, a misdemeanor.

However on Sunday, the board accepted Steinert's resignation.

The district plans to meet with parents Monday and Tuesday to address their concerns.

In a letter sent to parents, the board said it is looking into creating a task force to review district policies and consider new guidelines to deal with employees who are charged with criminal conduct.
