Though conditions are expected to remain less than ideal, classes resume at Chicago Public Schools on Friday.

"We urge all parents and families to make sure their children are prepared for the cold weather conditions," CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in a Thursday evening statement. "CPS is following its winter weather plan to ensure all students and school personnel have a warm, comfortable and safe learning environment.”

The decision angered thousands and prompted them to sign an online petition in an effort to get officials to change their mind.

Other districts that are also open Friday include Waukegan Community Unit School District #60, District 128 in Palos Heights, District 50 in Woodland and District 140 in Tinley Park.

Schools that are closed Friday include 21st Century Preparatory Center in Park Forest, Annunciata School in Chicago, Beacon Hill School in Chicago Heights, Berger-Vandenberg Elementary school in Dolton, District 108 in Willow Springs, District 104 in Summit and District 109 in Justice.

Hundreds of schools, businesses, daycare centers & organizations were closed Wednesday and Thursday as dangerously cold temperatures lingered in the Chicago area and forecast snow made for tough travel conditions.
