Sauk Village Treasurer Faces Drug Possession Charge

Sauk Village also said in a release “Griegel issued himself numerous checks from the Sauk Village Police Pension fund”

The treasurer for suburban Sauk Village faces a felony drug charge after being pulled over during a traffic stop on Sunday.

The Steger Police Department said at around 9:40 p.m. James M. Griegel was pulled over for a minor traffic violation, his rear registration light not working.

The officer noted that Griegel was acting “very nervous” when being asked questions and noted inconsistencies in his responses, according to police.

Police said the officer asked Griegel if he had anything illegal and although he initially said no, he eventually told the officer “okay I have to bags of heroin.”

Heroin was seized from his vehicle and he was placed in the Will County Detention Center until January 5, 2016 when he posted bond ($10,000), according to police.

Sauk Village said in a release that after his arrest, the local police department performed an audit of his office. It was discovered that April 2015 through November of 2015, “Griegel issued himself numerous checks from the Sauk Village Police Pension fund.”

The SVPD said Griegel admitted to taking police pension funds for personal use. The investigation was then given to the FDIC, FBI and US Attorney’s Office.

Griegel has been suspended from his position without pay and is not allowed in village offices, Sauk Village said. His attorney information wasn’t immediately available.
