SWAT Team Responds to Man Acting Erratically in Berwyn

Four blocks were temporarily shut down due to police activity

Police, firefighters and a SWAT team responded to an incident at a home in suburban Berwyn Sunday afternoon.

Police officers responded before noon to a man acting erratically and breaking windows in a house near 16th Street and Clinton, they said. As of 5:30 p.m., officers remained on the scene and were joined by firefighters and a SWAT team.

Four blocks were temporarily shut down due to police activity.

Four adults were allegedly inside the home but have since left. Police say the man had been drinking.

"We want to make sure that he's fine, that he's safe and that he's not injured. We don't know what his status or his condition is," Commander Tom O'Halloran said. "He was drinking, so we're not quite sure how he is physically. We want to make sure he's safe."

It was not clear if there were weapons in the home, but police say the man has had weapons in the past.

In a peaceful end to the situation, the man was taken from the home and to a hospital shortly after 5:30 p.m., police said.

It is unclear if the man will face charges.
