Robbery Investigation Leads to Recovery of Stolen Phones

An investigation led police to a search warrant for a cell phone store in the 0-100 block of West 79th Street, where they recovered 21 stolen phones

An investigation into the theft of two cell phones from a 19-year-old man at a South Side Chicago Transit Authority station led police to a nearby store with nearly two dozen stolen phones.

James Barnes, 40, allegedly robbed a teen of two cell phones around 11:20 a.m. Thursday at the 87th Street Red Line station, police said. The victim flagged down officers after the incident and Barnes was arrested.

An investigation led police to a search warrant for a cell phone store in the 0-100 block of West 79th Street, where they recovered 21 stolen phones.

Barnes was charged with one felony count of aggravated robbery and one felony count of violation of sex offender registration.

A second suspect, Michael Donaldson, 34, was charged with one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer and one misdemeanor count of theft amount to less $500.

Police did not name the store where the phones were recovered.
