Returning Soldier Gets Surprise Welcome Home

Lombard native and Navy Lt. Bill Peters got a rock star welcome Friday after returning home from overseas.

Peters, 43, was greeted on his arrival home by a crowd of family, friends and the Warriors Watch Riders group.

"This is my job, so this is really kind of awkward for me to be honest," Peters said.

Peters did a tour of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and it's been 264 days since he's seen his wife of five years and his son, Zander, who turned 2 in April.

It was an especially heartwarming reunion for Peters' mom, Lana.

"It's my birthday, I couldn't be more thrilled," Lana Peters said.

Peters, who plays the drums and loves watching sports, can't wait to catch up on his beloved Bears on Sunday.

He can't wait to catch up with his family, but says leaving his military family was bittersweet.

"You're leaving people behind, but luckily everyone I was there with came back," Peters said.
