Residents Told to Stay Indoors After Fox Lake Officer's Fatal Shooting

Residents were told to remain in their homes and area schools were put on lockdown amid a manhunt for three armed suspects following the fatal shooting of an officer in Fox Lake, police said.

Detective Christopher Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff's office advised residents during a Tuesday press conference to "remain inside" and report any suspicious activity as police continue their investigation.

Covelli said an officer was investigating three suspicious suspects just before 8 a.m. Tuesday near Route 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake when he began a foot pursuit. A backup officer arrived at the scene and found the officer in marshy area with a gunshot wound, Covelli said.

The suspects were described as two white men and one black man, but further details on their descriptions weren't available.

Chief Doug Larsson with the Lake County Sheriff's office said the department, along with several other suburban departments, is using canines and helicopters to search for the suspects. The suspects are armed with a pistol, Larsson said. The FBI is also assisting in the investigation, according to spokesperson Joan Hyde.

When the manhunt began after the shooting, Grant Community High School in Fox Lake was put on lockdown.

The school said a "police matter is occurring in the community and for the safety of our students and staff they have requested we remain locked down."

Roads in the area were blocked off, and police were seen searching wooded areas with dogs.

Metra said the Ingleside Metra station was closed until further notice and riders would be bussed from the Fox Lake station to Long Lake, officials said.
