The Chicago Cubs went into the offseason looking to upgrade their pitching rotation, and they took a big step in that direction on Friday as they reportedly agreed to a two-year, $32 million deal with John Lackey.
CSN Chicago’s Patrick Mooney said a source confirmed the contract details, which were first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Lackey, who went 13-10 with a 2.77 ERA in 33 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals last year, will be 37 years old when the new season starts, and will be the second-highest paid player in terms of average salary on the Cubs’ roster, trailing only Jon Lester in that regard.
The move gives the Cubs a veteran middle-of-the-rotation starter that they were lacking down the stretch in 2015. The Cubs are also expected to add a young, cost-controlled starting pitcher via trade this offseason, and they still could add a pricey free agent in center field, with Jason Heyward’s name floating around as a possible fit for the Cubs at the position.
