Report Ranks Best and Worst States to Have a Baby

Having a baby can be expensive, but where you live can have a big impact on how much it costs to have a child, according to a new study.

A report from Wallethub, a personal finance website, has ranked 2015’s best and worst states to have a baby and it would appear Vermont is the best state for newborns. Mississippi was listed as the worst.

The ranking used metrics like delivery costs, average annual infant-care costs, the per-capita number of midwives and OB-GYNs, and the per-capita number of child care centers.

Also among the top five states for having a baby were North Dakota, Oregon, Hawaii and Minnesota.

The worst states included Pennsylvania, West Virginia, South Carolina and Nevada.

Illinois made the list at no. 31.
