$26 Million Renovated Terminal Opens At O'Hare

The new international terminal includes 24 new dining and retail options

    After more than a year of renovations, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Senator Dick Durbin cut the ribbon on O'Hare expansion of Terminal 5. NBC 5's Mary Ann Ahern gives us a tour.

    The newly renovated Terminal 5 at O'Hare International Airport opened Friday after a $26 million makeover.

    The new international terminal features 24 new retail and dining options, as well as a redesigned TSA checkpoint. Among the new restaurants are gourmet deli The Goddess & Grocer, Chef Rick Bayless's Tortas Frontera and restaurants from Chicago-based restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises.

    Senator Dick Durbin spoke at the grand opening Friday alongside Mayor Rahm Emanuel and airport officials.

    "As the gateway for international travelers entering Chicago, the new Terminal 5 will deliver a first class experience that showcases the city's vibrant, modern identity," Durbin said.

    A small alligator was discovered inside O'Hare International Airport Friday. Regina Waldroup reports.

    The new terminal is expected to create more than 400 jobs. Emanuel said he hopes to increase annual visitors to 55 million by 2020.

    In addition to the Terminal 5 renovation, Emanuel has proposed the construction of a new runway on the airport's south airfield and a new intermodal facility to accommodate parking for rental cars and create more public parking spaces.

    Since 2011, O'Hare and Midway International Airports have added more than 30 destinations, including Doha by Qatar Airways, Beijing by Hainan Airlines, Panama by Copa Airlines and Dubai by Emirates.
