Quinn, Cardinal Share ‘Productive' Meeting

Most of discussion about fighting poverty

Gov. Pat Quinn and Cardinal Francis George say they had a friendly and productive private meeting about a month after a public disagreement over abortion.

The cardinal and the state's 13 Catholic bishops scolded Quinn last month for agreeing to present an award at a ceremony hosted by an abortion-rights organization. They toned down that criticism after learning the award was given to a rape victim.

They later sent the Catholic governor a letter requesting a meeting.

George described the two-hour meeting Friday with the bishops and Quinn as friendly and faith based. But the governor said Saturday there was just a "little bit'' of discussion about abortion and gay rights.

Quinn says most of the discussion was about how they can work together to fight poverty.
