Prosecutors: Father Who Shot Woman In Front of Children Thought She Gave Him an STD

A man accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend in front of their two young children in Chicago believed she had given him a sexually transmitted disease, prosecutors said at a bail hearing Thursday.

Myron Mason, 33, is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Mechelle Lewis, 28, whom prosecutors say he shot eight times in her car in front of her 5-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. He was denied bail Thursday.

Prosecutors say Mason, who had dated Lewis for 10 years before they split up last December, was arguing with Lewis on the phone shortly before the shooting.

He pulled up behind her car as she parked outside her apartment in the 7200 block of South Bennett Avenue, then walked up and shot her eight times in the driver’s seat, according to prosecutors.

Mason grabbed the boy from the front seat, whispered something in Lewis’ ear and hit her over the head with the gun, according to prosecutors. Her daughter witnessed everything from the back seat, prosecutors said.

Mason then allegedly drove away with the kids in the car.

Lewis' boyfriend witnessed the murder and called police, giving them a description of Mason and his vehicle.

Police said they found Mason’s vehicle 10 minutes later about two miles away. The two children were not injured, officials said. Police earlier reported that Mason called police and told them where he was.

Authorities said Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene, and a weapon was recovered.
