Police Warn of Catalytic Converter Thefts in Chicago

Police have warned residents in Chicago after a series of catalytic converter thefts in the citys Beverly and Morgan Park neighborhoods.

Police said the thefts take place between midnight and 5:30 a.m. and most of the targeted vehicles appear to be small, mid-size SUVs.

Victims and witnesses have reported seeing two men dressed in hooded sweatshirts committing the thefts. The men were driving in a black Mercedes sedan with Illinois Dealer plates, police said in a community alert issued Thursday.

After thieves cut the catalytics converters off of cars, the converters are usually taken to junk yards and could be worth up to several hundred dollars, authorities said.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call (312) 747-8273.
