Police Step Up Patrols As Newsstand Awaits Delivery of Charlie Hebdo

The newest issue of the controversial French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo will be available at the Chicago Main Newsstand on Friday

Evanston police stepped up patrols Wednesday night as the city awaits delivery of the controversial magazine that sparked a deadly terror attack in Paris.

The newest issue of the controversial French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo will be available at the Chicago Main Newsstand on Friday. Its cover features a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad. The stores staff said they are getting a lot of interest but they are also a bit concerned.

“We’ve been getting a lot of phone calls and everybody seems interested in seeing a copy,” Chicago Main Newsstand employee Eric Ismond told NBC Chicago. “But there’s something in the back of the mind, of course, that something possibly could happen.”

This issue is the first to be published by Charlie Hebdo since terrorists raided the magazine’s offices in Paris killing 12 people.

The terrorists targeted the magazine for its controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Police said they are increasing their patrols around the newsstand and also at the city’s eight transit stops as a precaution.

“We’re out there staying on top of it and trying to let the public know that we are there for them,” Evanston Police commander Joseph Dugan said.

Officials ask that if anyone witnesses suspicious behavior, to immediately contact the police department.
