Police Shoot Man Wielding Tire Iron

No officers were injured

Chicago Police officers shot a man overnight in the South Austin neighborhood after police said he wouldn't drop a tire iron while officers pursued him.

Police News Affairs said officers from the Violence Initiative Team were patrolling the 200 block of North Lockwood Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Sunday when they stopped to talk to three men.

As the officers approached them, the men took off running and police went after them. At one point one of the men pulled out an object from his waistband, police said. Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden told reporters he was wielding a tire iron.

The officers ordered the man to drop the object, but police said he refused. An officer shot the man, who was placed under arrest and taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The two other men escaped.

No officers were injured.
