Chicago police shot and wounded a man early Monday morning on Chicago’s North Side after officers said the man refused to stop beating someone with a baseball bat.
Several officers were flagged down while on patrol around 4 a.m. by a person who said there was a large fight in the street near the intersection of Clybourn Avenue and Halsted Street.
When officers arrived, they saw a man beating another man on the ground with a baseball bat.
According to Department Chief Carlos Velez, the man refused police orders to stop the beating and an officer opened fire on the suspect to save the victim’s life.
Chicago Fire Department officials said the suspect was transported from the scene to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. They were listed in serious to critical condition.
The man who was beaten was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. Details on the victim's condition were not immediately clear.
Police said a baseball bat was recovered from the scene.

The busy intersection was blocked off Monday morning while police investigated and an investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority was ongoing.
