Police Shoot Man Armed with Knife in Bedroom

Man tries to escape hospital after shooting, police say

Police shot a man who lunged at them with a knife early Sunday after the man was involved in a domestic incident on the Far South Side.

About 5:15 a.m. police shot a man in a home near 83rd Street and Lafayette Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

The man shot was “stabilized” at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to Perez.

Gresham District police officers were assisting the Illinois State Police in trying to arrest a 54-year-old man who was involved in a domestic incident that occurred earlier in the day on a local expressway, according to a police News Affairs release.

Armed with a knife, the man barricaded himself in a bedroom at the Lafayette address. When officers entered the bedroom, the man lunged at them with a knife -- causing one officer to shoot him, the release said.

A police source said the man was not holding any hostages.

The man was taken into custody and transported to Stroger where he tried to escape the hospital at 6:08 a.m., according to a police source.

At 6:53 a.m., a woman was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center from the Lafayette address with unidentified injures.

Charges are pending at this time, Perez said.

No police officers were injured and the matter remains under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority and Calumet Area detectives.
