A man was fatally shot by police on the South Side early Saturday morning.

Just before 2:00 a.m., police shot and killed a man near the intersection of Cottage Grove and 79th Street, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.

Chicago Police Officers were notified of a personal-injury traffic crash on the 800 block of East 79th Street.  They attempted to curb a vehicle that witnesses say was involved in the accident, the offender's vehicle was then stopped at a nearby gas station, Police said.

The officers ordered the subject to exit the vehicle when he began driving toward the officers in an attempt to strike one of them.  In fear for his life the officer began shooting at the man, fatally wounding him, the release said.

The unidentified man, in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Further details were not immediately available and the matter remains under investigation.
