In days gone by, the buffalo were allowed to roam. After all, they were here first.
But not anymore.
Police in Menomonie, Wis., shot and killed two buffalo after the animals escaped from a pen and headed for Interstate 94.
They say they had no choice after attempts to lure the beasts with food or stop them some other way failed.
Merlin Nevala runs the Lion’s Club Game Park in Menomonie’s Wakanda Park. He said the two female buffalo jumped over their gate and got loose late Wednesday afternoon.
They wouldn’t be lured with feed, and police finally shot them when they jumped a right-of-way fence running along I-94.
Nevala said the buffalo would be processed, and the meat could go to a local food bank. .

The park still has two remaining buffalo.
In a similar incident, a buffalo ran loose in Benton Harbor, Mich., last month after escaping from the home of former Alderman Ed Vrdolyak. That animal met with the same fate, when police were unable to recapture it.
