Cops: Toddler Left on Curb in Englewood

Boy left on curb thought to be between 20 and 24 months old

Police said a young boy was found alone Friday morning on a sidewalk in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood.

Citizens notified police after they found the boy, thought to be between 20 and 24 months old, at about 9:45 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Stewart Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

Police said he was left on the curb by an unknown man driving a beige vehicle.

"I was so upset about what happened I wasn't thinking. I was only thinking of that baby," said Jerome Glenn, who witnessed the incident. "That's inhumane. You don't do a dog like that."

Glenn said he heard a loud noise outside his home around 9:45 a.m. and when he looked outside he saw the driver of what he described as a Chevy Tahoe drop the child off and speed away.

"He left him there on purpose," said Glenn. "He threw his shoes out as if the baby was a grown man."

The unidentified boy was cleanly dressed and had no apparent signs of trauma, but was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center for examination, Sedevic said.

The boy is wearing a blue jacket with red trim, beige pants, black and white socks, and Nike Jordan shoes.

Dr. Christopher Colbert, an emergency room doctor at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Center, said the young boy was "okay" and "playful."

Officials said the boy's mother was notified of the incident and went to the hospital after a family member saw the boy's picture on social media.

"A family member identified the child and communicated to the mother who was at work," said Colbert.

The state Department of Child and Family Services was contacted, Sedevic said. Offiicials with DCFS, along with police, interviewed the mother, but a hospital spokesperson said the child was taken into cutsody by DCFS.
