Police Search for Inmate Who Escaped From Markham Courthouse

Police are searching for a 31-year-old woman who escaped from a Markham courthouse Tuesday morning.

Police said Vivian McGee, 31, was at the District 6 Courthouse in Markham around 11:30 a.m. for a preliminary hearing but managed to slip out of her handcuffs and leave the staging area behind the courtroom.

The Cook County Sheriff's office said it is actively searching for McGee and expects "to have her her back in custody very shortly."

McGee was arrested by Harvey police Friday and charged with retail theft and driving under the influence. Her bond was set at $10,000.

"She is not armed or dangerous, has never been charged or convicted of any violent offense and presents no risk to the public," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
