A 19-year-old man died Monday night after Fire Department divers helped rescue him from Ohio Street Beach.

The man and a group of friends swam about 50 yards out to a buoy, and he couldn't make it back.

A pair of police helicopters and a crew of divers were searching the water for nearly and hour trying to rescue the man, according to Police News Affairs.

Just after 9 p.m., a member of the group flagged down a police officer and told him the man was stranded in the water near the Water Reclamation Plant, officials said.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
