Marquette Park Lagoon Search Continues for Possible Remains of Missing Woman

Chicago police continued to search a Southwest Side lagoon Wednesday looking for evidence in an undisclosed criminal investigation.

Police Marine Unit divers first arrived at the lagoon near 71st and California Tuesday night after receiving a tip.

Detectives will not release what the tip was or what they are looking for, but the lagoon is located in the same area where a Georgia woman, Laneesha Miller, was reported missing in late June.

Miller’s parents say the 28-year-old had never returned home after visiting friends in Chicago. She last talked to her father on June 21, according to family members. The mother of three has relatives in Chicago, but they will not comment on the case at the request of her parents.

When news of the lagoon search broke, Miller’s mother posted a message to her Facebook page asking for “prayer warriors” to pray for her daughter’s safe return.

Investigators began draining thousands of gallons of water from the lagoon Tuesday night to help divers make their way through the murky waters.

A source close to the investigation told NBC Chicago it could take up to 100 man hours to drain just a small portion of the lagoon, meaning it may be a few days until the water is emptied.

As of Wednesday evening there has been no word on what, if any, evidence the search has since discovered.

Chicago Police news affairs says detectives do not want to release details or confirm if the investigation is indeed connected to the disappearance Laneesha Miller while the search is ongoing.
