Police Say Man Attacked Elderly Neighbor Over Fishing Tackle

Man charged with felony aggravated battery for allegedly hitting 80-year-old man on the head with a two-by-four

A man accused of hitting his 80-year-old neighbor with a board during an argument over fishing tackle and $8 in cash has been held on $250,000 bond.

Corey Mitchell, 32, is charged with felony aggravated battery of a person over 60 for the incident that happened about 11 a.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of South Wells, police said.

An 80-year-old man was sitting with his wife on a bench outside his home when Mitchell allegedly came down the porch stairs and hit the man on the head with a two-by-four, according to a police report.

They had previously argued over fishing tackle and $8 in cash, the report said.

The elderly man, who told police he is a veteran, was taken to Mercy Hospital for a gash to the head and swelling to his left eye, the report said. His condition was stable.

Mitchell, also of the 4300 block of South Wells, was arrested the next day during a traffic stop, the report said.

He was ordered held on $250,000 bond and will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing Sept. 2, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.
