Police: “People of Interest” in Death of Man Found Rolled in Carpet

Authorities have identified “people of interest” in the death of a man found dead and rolled up in a carpet last week in northwest Indiana.

About 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, authorities were called to the woods about half a mile north of the 2200 block of Fairbanks Street in Gary, according to a statement from Gary police.

A man called after his son, who was riding an ATV in the wooded area, told his dad he saw an animal rolled up in a carpet, police said. The dad went to check and discovered it was a actually a person.

Because of the area and weather conditions, officers had to take special vehicles to the location of the body, police said.

The body was later identified as 30-year-old Nathan Marshall of the 1400 block of Fischrupp Avenue in Whiting, Ind., according to the coroner’s office.

Police said Marshall was reported missing Jan. 23 by a family member who said he hadn’t been seen since Christmas.

As of Monday morning, a cause of death had not yet been determined, police said, though the death is considered “suspicious.”

Officer Thomas Decanter said the investigation is ongoing and a couple of “people of interest” have been identified.
