Police: North Suburban Woman Lit Boyfriend on Fire During Argument

Boyfriend remains in critical condition Monday with second- and third-degree burns over 45 percent of his body

A 34-year-old woman doused her boyfriend with gasoline and set him on fire during a fight Sunday at their home near north suburban Antioch, leaving him in critical condition, according to police.

Deborah C. Roberts was charged following the 7:30 p.m. incident at the couple’s home in the 25000 block of Golfview Avenue in unincorporated Antioch, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Her 43-year-old boyfriend remains in critical condition Monday with second- and third-degree burns over 45 percent of his body, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators determined they were involved in a argument when Roberts pushed the man down the front porch stairs, injuring his foot, police claim.

Roberts then doused him in gasoline and set him on fire, authorities claim. The man was able to put out the flames with a garden hose while Roberts continued to pour gasoline on him.

Responding deputies found the man with severe burns to his torso, arms, face and head, police said. He was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville, then flown to the burn unit at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, where he is currently being treated.

Roberts is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a flammable substance, and aggravated domestic battery, the sheriff’s office said. She is being held at the Lake County jail on a $250,000 bond, and will next appear in court June 10.
