Police: Man Threatened to Shoot Self, Others Near Suburban School

A “despondent” gunman threatened to shoot himself, several others and any responding officers in a building across the street from Plainfield Central High School Wednesday, police said.

At 5:25 p.m., officers coordinated a lockdown with the high school and began setting up perimeter on the 15000 block of South James Street in Plainfield, according to a statement from the Plainfield Police Department.

While the officers set up the perimeter, a 64-year-old gunman exited a home on James Street and began walking toward officers with a gun pointed at his head, police said.

After an hour standoff, the gunman surrendered. It was later determined that the weapon he was holding was a “realistic replica style hand gun,” according to the statement.

The man was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
