Residential Burglaries Prompt Police Warning

Community Alert warns residents of increasing burglaries occurring on the South Side

Police issued a Community Alert this weekend after an increase in residential burglaries on the city's South Side.

Throughout the month of December, burglaries have occurred in the 5600 to 6300 block of South Michigan and Indiana avenues, according to Wentworth Area detectives.

Police urged residents to activate alarm systems, keep the home's perimeter well-lit and never let mail, newspapers or packages pile up. Residents also can create the illusion of being home by using timers on lights, radios and TVs, police said.

Residents of the targeted area should inform neighbors of any lengthy absences and take precautions such as removing valuables from plain view, police warned. The also recommended allowing neighbors to park in assigned parking spaces or driveways while away.

Anyone who notices suspicious people or vehicles in the area is asked to call police.
