Police Issue Alert Over CTA Blue Line Pickpockets

Police are warning CTA Blue Line riders about a group targeting riders traveling from O’Hare to the city.

The thieves work in groups of two or three, stealing from unsuspecting victims, police say. While one distracts, the other picks a victim’s pockets.

Last week at the Washington Street stop, one man got off the train pretending to get stuck between the doors and the platform. That's when a 59-year-old victim stepped in to help. Another offender bumped into the man, stealing his wallet in the process.

“I'm a pretty trusting person. I'd probably fall for it,” CTA rider Nathan Simms said.

Another rider said photos of the suspects would be best posted across the station.

“I'd like to see some pictures and banners!” CTA rider Tim Dosantos said.

The suspects are described as 45-55 years old. One wears a surgical mask sometimes, and they usually carry a clothing or garment bag to hide the pick from would-be witnesses.

Guardian Angels citizen patrollers were seen informing people about the alert sent by police.

Authorities advise riders to say something if they see something suspicious. They also advise not to pursue assailants, simply call 911 immediately.
