Police Investigate After Tainted Treats Sicken Dog in Northwest Suburb

Police are investigating a report of tainted dog treats found in the backyard of a northwest suburban home.

Schaumburg police said the treats were found Monday afternoon in the backyard of a home in the 0-100 block of Stevens Drive.

The owner told authorities they saw their dog eating a treat in their backyard that they had not given and discovered several of the treats in their yard.

Police said the owner then noticed an “unknown foreign substance in the treat,” according to a release from police.

The dog is being treated by a veterinarian for intestinal discomfort, police said.

Police believe the incident is an “isolated incident” and have not received other reports of tainted dog treats.

“We urge pet owners to observe their dogs during walks or while playing in their yard to prevent that from eating something found on the ground,” the release said.

Arlington Heights Animal Hospital issued a warning after the incident, saying one of their patients had been "exposed."

"Someone in Schaumburg is putting some kind of poisonous substance in dog treats and leaving them around for unsuspecting pets," the post read. "One of our patients has been exposed. Please be alert while walking your dogs."
