Police: Homeless Man Charged After Swinging Sword on North Side

He was reportedly ordered held on $1,000 bail Saturday

A homeless man has been charged after he was allegedly swinging a three-foot sword at Diversey Harbor, frightening others in the area.

Police said 38-year-old Raymond Bensfield was charged with reckless conduct and possession of a deadly weapon after he was shouting a swinging a sword around 3:30 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of West Diversey Parkway “placing others around him in fear.”

Court documents claim he was swinging the sword “wildly” next to a group of men who were grilling food along the edge of Diversey Harbor, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The man, whose public defender said is homeless, was also reportedly shouting racial slurs during the incident.

He was reportedly ordered held on $1,000 bail Saturday.
