Police: 3 Killed, 15 Hurt in Weekend Shootings

Three men were killed and at least 15 others have been wounded in shootings across the city since Saturday afternoon, police said.

The two most recent fatal shootings happened within minutes of each other early Sunday.

At about 3:10 a.m., someone opened fire during a party in the basement of an apartment in the 800 block of South Oakley.

A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times in the face and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

A 33-year-old man who shot in the chest and back was taken to Stroger, and a 26-year-old man shot in the abdomen was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Both were listed in critical condition, police said.

Five minutes later a 27-year-old man was found shot dead inside a vehicle in Old Town on the Near North Side.

The man’s car had struck several parked cars before coming to a stop where officers found him about 3:15 a.m. in the 400 block of West Evergreen, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality but did not release additional details early Sunday.

Another vehicle was seen leaving the scene but police did not have a description.

Saturday afternoon, a Humboldt Park neighborhood shooting on the West Side left a 22-year-old man dead.

At about 2 p.m., Anthony Jackson was in a vehicle heading north in the 700 block of North Hamlin when a car pulled alongside him and someone inside opened fire, striking him in the back, according to police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Jackson, of the 300 block of West Lexington, was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was later pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m., authorities said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened early Sunday in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

The man, 43, was outside at about 4:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of South Greenwood after arguing with another male, police said. The male approached the 43-year-old and fired shots, striking him in the left calf. He took himself to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition, police said.

Five minutes earlier, a teen was critically hurt in a shooting that also injured a man in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

A 20-year-old man was driving with a 17-year-old boy in the passenger seat at about 4:25 a.m. in the 1700 block of West 47th Street when another vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire, police said.

The teen was shot in the head and a bullet grazed the left side of the man’s body, police said. He drove them to Stroger Hospital, where the teen was listed in critical condition. The driver’s condition was stabilized.

Late Saturday, two teenage boys were wounded -- one of them critically -- in a West Englewood shooting.

The teens were standing on the sidewalk in the 5700 block of South Marshfield at about 10:50 p.m. when a gunman walked up and fired shots, police said.

A 14-year-old boy was shot in the right armpit and back and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the neck, arm and buttocks and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition had stabilized, police said.

At least eight other people have been hurt in separate shootings since 2 p.m. Saturday.
