17 Kids Injured When Inflatable Slide Tips Over At Algonquin School

Six children were transported to a local hospital, but their injuries were not serious

Seventeen children were hurt Thursday when an inflatable slide collapsed inside an elementary school in northwest suburban Algonquin, fire officials said.

The slide was inside Algonquin Lakes Elementary School, at 1401 Compton Dr., when it tipped over. The deputy fire chief said there was a field day event at the school and the slide was moved inside because of the weather.

"I saw it happen. People were leaning to one side and pushing it and then it just tipped to that side and everyone just fell," said fifth grader Grayson Keefe.

Six children were transported to a local hospital, but their injuries were not serious.

The Journal of Pediatrics says accidents involving inflatable slides increased 15-fold between 1995 and 2010. Some of those accidents resulted in fatalities.
