Person of Interest Questioned in Baseball Bat Attack on Cop

Chicago police on Monday were questioning a person of interest in the weekend attack of one of their own.

An officer was struck in the head with a baseball bat Saturday morning while trying to break up a street fight, police said.

The officer was responding to a call about a battery in progress around 12:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Winchester in the West Englewood neighborhood, officials said.

Several men were in the street fighting and when the officer attempted to break up the fight he was struck on the head and attacked with a baseball bat, according to authorities.

Police said the fighting offenders fled the scene.

The officer was treated and released from John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County over the weekend.

No charges have been filed in the incident.
