Man Dies After Being Shot by Police in Humboldt Park

A man has died after he was shot by Chicago police Friday night in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Police responded to a call in the 900 block of N. Central Park at about 8:55 p.m. for reports of a "domestic-related man with a knife," according to a preliminary statement from police. When the officers arrived, they found the man holding what appeared to be a knife or another sharp object in his hand.

The mother of the man, who was identified as 33-year-old James Anderson, said she called police to help get him to a hospital for treatment because he was bipolar and had not been taking his medication.

When they arrived, the officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he ignored their commands, police said. He then "approached the officers in a threatening manner," leading police to use a taser, which they said had no effect on him. The officers asked him to drop the weapon a second time, and when he did not obey, they used the taser again.

The man then approached the officers "while still wielding the weapon," and an officer shot him as a result, police said.

The man was transported to a Mt. Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound, and a weapon was recovered at the scene, according to police. No officers were injured.

The mother of the man, who claims her son was unarmed, said he later died of his injuries.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
