Peet's Coffee & Tea Sued Over French Press Serving Sizes

The company said they are “absolutely committed" to looking into the lawsuit

A man in Cook County has filed a lawsuit against Peet's Coffee & Tea, claiming that the chain is not serving customers the amount of coffee in French press containers it advertises.

Robert Garrett’s lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court alleges that the size of the coffee in press pots is over 25 percent lower than the chain claims it serves on its menus.

The chain advertises a pair of sizes, 12- and 32-ounces, referred to as “press pots.” Peets serves the coffee directly into the carafe rather than a cup.

Garrett purchased both sizes of press pots at the chain’s location on Elm Street in Winnetka, according to the lawsuit. He is seeking class-action status for the lawsuit.

Peet's Coffee & Tea Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Ricks said that while they haven’t been served papers yet, they are “absolutely committed to looking into this.”

“We absolutely take these things seriously, we’re all about transparency,” Ricks said. “We’re not trying to hide anything from anyone.”

“We labeled items on the menu by the size of the press pot, and so the reality is that you fill it to the line of the press pot but there are also other grounds in the pot as well,” Ricks said. “The grounds do take up volume in the container even after you have pressed them.”

“I think that’s the question of the lawsuit: is that the correct way to label it,” Ricks said.
