A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line train Tuesday.

The person was struck shortly after 5 p.m. at the Des Plaines station by outbound train No. 629, which was destined for Crystal Lake.

Witnesses say the victim, a male in his 40s, stepped off the platform in front of the moving train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inbound and outbound trains between Harvard and Chicago were delayed 35 to 90 minutes, according to the Metra web site, but were authorized to proceed slowly through the accident area by 6 p.m.
