Parking Around Wrigley Field to Increase: Report

Wrigley Field just could get a little more expensive, Crain’s reports, citing Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s new budget proposal that would raise the cost of parking around Wrigley Field during Cubs games.

According to Crain’s, starting next season, parking meters around the field would be $4 per hour starting two hours before a game until one hour after under the budget proposal.

A spokeswoman reportedly told Crain’s the proposal is meant to mitigate congestion and create turnover for local businesses.

The spokeswoman, Molly Poppe, said the pilot program could net the city around $2.4 million next year.

About a third of Wrigley game attendees drive each year, Crain’s reports citing Cubs and neighborhood surveys, leading to about 5,000 cars in the area during games.

There are far cheaper options, about 1,300 of them, within the boundaries of Irving Park Road, Southport Avenue, North Broadway and Belmont Avenue that will cost fans about $2 an hour.

Of course, Cubs fans can still always rely on the $20 to $30 game day lots and garages.
