Overexposing Alexi

State treasurer will star in new film; run for U.S. Senate

Is it too soon to be sick of Alexi Giannoulias?

It's bad enough that the upstart state Treasurer just raised $1.1 million in 28 days to run for U.S. Senate - while the chiseling of achievements on Roland Burris's mausoleum is still warm and the endless stories of his basketball bromance with Barack Obama finally subsiding.

Now comes word that the same filmmaker who brought us Barbershop is making a documentary about a wealthy banking heir whose first foray into politics was to essentially buy a statewide office right here in Illinois; that's right, Alexi Giannoulias will be the subject of Bob Teitel's new documentary.

"He's got an interesting story to tell," Teitel told Shia Kapos of Crain's Chicago Business.

You mean the one about how he's apparently The Greatest Illinois Treasurer Ever? Or the one about his family's Broadway Bank and its ties to Giannoulias donors as well as reputed mob links?

Maybe the focus will be on Money Smart Week, where Giannoulias's office will teach folk how to better manage their money. First, be born into a wealthy banking family . . .

Steve Rhodes is the proprietor of The Beachwood Reporter, which as a rule reserves its highest skepticism to candidates with the most money.
