Two Dead, 17 Injured in Weekend Shootings

Among the victims was a 39-year-old man who was shot to death in the Morgan Park neighborhood Friday night, police said

Two people were killed and at least 17 others injured in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The first fatal shooting of the weekend happened Friday night. A 39-year-old man was shot to death at about 10:35 p.m. in the 11300 block of South Green in the Morgan Park neighborhood following a domestic argument, according to Chicago Police spokesman Sgt. Bob Kane.

The man was allegedly arguing with another man inside a home when the second man pulled out a handgun and shot him in the chest. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The suspect is in custody, and the incident remains under investigation.

Another man was shot to death Saturday night in the South Side Park Manor neighborhood.

A 22-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle at about 8:40 p.m. in the 400 block of East 72nd Street when two people walked up to him. One of the men shot the victim multiple times in his side, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Stacey Cooper.

The victim's friends took him to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

At least 17 other people were injured in shootings:

  • A 28-year-old man was injured in a shooting and subsequent car crash at about 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 7400 block of South Peoria. The man was driving a car when someone fired shots and struck him in the shoulder. Following the shooting, the driver struck a pole, according to Sgt. Kane. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in fair condition.
  • A 27-year-old man was shot in the chest at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2100 block of South Wabash in the South Loop. The man was sitting in a parked SUV when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. His friends took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized. No one is in custody.
  • A man, whose age was not immediately available, was shot in the arm at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 4600 block of West 82nd Street in the Ashburn neighborhood. Police found the man on the sidewalk, and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, police said.
  • Two men, aged 31 and 33, were shot at about 4:50 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of North Mozart in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The men were walking out of a home when a car pulled up with someone inside possibly yelling gang slogans, News Affairs Officer Cooper said. Someone inside the car then fired shots, striking the 31-year-old man in the stomach and the 33-year-old man in the upper right arm. Both men were transported to Norwegian American Hospital in good condition. They were later transferred to John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital.
  • A 33-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of South Blue Island in the Pilsen neighborhood. The man appeared to be in fair condition, but he refused medical treatment. A police source said he was a documented gang member. 
  • A 19-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the leg during a robbery at about 10:55 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of East Hyde Park Boulevard in the Kenwood neighborhood. The teen was walking with his friends when a group of men walked up and asked him about his gang affiliations, according to Officer Cooper. The men then announced a robbery, stole one of the victim's gym shoes and fired shots, striking the 19-year-old. The teen refused medical treatment. Several people were being questioned in the incident.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot several times at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of South Kedzie in the Brighton Park neighborhood. The man was with two other men when they ran into a group of people who began yelling gang slogans and started a fight, according to Officer Cooper. Someone then fired shots and hit the 22-year-old multiple times. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. The two other men, aged 22 and 24, were beaten up and taken to Saint Anthony's Hospital in good condition.
  • A 30-year-old man was shot in the arm at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 7700 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Ashburn neighborhood. The man was walking in an alleyway when two men walked up and started talking to him, Officer Cooper said. One of the men then pulled out a handgun and opened fire. The gunman fled, and the victim was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. No one is in custody.
  • A 30-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting at about 12:25 a.m. in the 11200 block of South Wentworth Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood. The woman was riding as a passenger in a car when another car pulled up and someone inside fired shots. A family member took the victim to Roseland Community Hospital in stable condition. No one is in custody.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the upper shoulder at about 2:35 a.m. Sunday in the 3300 block of South Lituanica in the Bridgeport neighborhood. The man was driving in the block when someone inside a dark-colored sedan fired shots at him. The victim drove himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he remained in good condition.
  • Two men, aged 21 and 22, were shot at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the 5500 block of West Gladys in the Austin neighborhood. The men were sitting on a porch when they heard shots fired and felt pain. The 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and leg, and the 22-year-old was shot in the wrist and ankle. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. A police source said they are both documented gang members.
  • A 34-year-old man was shot at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday in the 8700 block of South State Street in the Chatham neighborhood. Officers found the man lying in the street with gunshot wounds to his stomach and leg. He was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.
  • A 43-year-old man was shot in the calf at about 5 a.m. Sunday in the 5200 block of South Winchester in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The man was walking in the block when a maroon car drove by and someone inside fired shots. The man walked four blocks away and called police. He was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital in good condition.
  • Shots were also fired on the Eisenhower Expressway near Independence Boulevard on the city's West Side early Sunday morning, Illinois State Police said. It was not immediately clear if anyone had been injured.
  • A 20-year-old man was shot in his thumb at about 12:40 p.m. Sunday in the 8500 block of South Stony Island in the Avalon Park neighborhood. The man walked into South Shore Hospital for treatment and was in good condition. No one is custody.
  • A 35-year-old woman was shot in the arm at about 2 p.m. in the 3600 block of North Oleander in the Dunning neighborhood. She was taken to Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital. A police source said the incident appeared to be domestic-related.
