Pregnant Woman Hospitalized, 5 Arrested After Navy Pier Fight

"It was like Braveheart"

A pregnant woman was hospitalized and five people were arrested after a fight Friday night at Navy Pier, officials said.

At about 7:45 p.m, officers responded to the disturbance involving about 30 people at the popular tourist destination, police said. Five people were later arrested for reckless conduct, police said.

Fire officials said a pregnant woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t thought to be life-threatening.

No gunshots were fired, but there was some property damage due to the teens "hanging on light fixtures," Navy Pier officials said.

Kushal Sharma, a Navy Pier worker who sells souvenirs, said he saw about 100 teenagers involved in about eight separate fights.

“It was like Braveheart,” said Sharma, referencing a movie about a medieval war.

Navy Pier was hosting Winter Wonderfest, an annual holiday festival, at the time of the incident, but the director of communications at Navy Pier, Nick Shields, said the incident is not indicative of what happens during the festival, calling the stunt "ridiculous."

As a result of the fight, there will be increased security presence at Navy Pier, according to Nick Shields, the director of communications at Navy Pier. In addition, all people under the age of 18 will not be allowed into the tourist attraction without a parent or guardian with them.

Navy Pier offered refunds to those in attendance at the festival Friday night during the incident.
