A man hailed as "police officer of the year" has been accused of pistol-whipping a police chief.
Carl Sain is known by many on the North Chicago Police Deparment as "police officer of the year." Now, he may be adding "pistol-whipped a police chief" to titles after his name.
Sain's been charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault for an alleged attack on Waukegan Police Chief Artis Yancey.
The scene of the last week's crime? The home of Sain's estranged wife, according to Lake County State Attorney Michael Waller.
Waller says the 45-year-old Sain punched Yancey and hit him repeatedly with his handgun. He says Sain broke bones in Yancey's face.
Sain has been released on $75,000 bond and is expected back in court Wednesday. His telephone number is unlisted.
North Chicago police didn't immediately return a telephone message.
