Chicago officers shot and killed a man Sunday night after police said they saw him stabbing his estranged wife and then turned the knife on them.

Police said the woman called police just before 10 p.m. saying she saw her ex-husband at a store with a big butcher knife. She said he followed her home.

When officers arrived at the house in the 5200 block of South Mozart, they asked to see the order of protection she had against the man.

As she walked down the gangway toward her backdoor to get the paperwork, officers said they heard screams.

They ran over and saw her husband on top of her, stabbing her.

"The offender then turned and lunged towards the officers in an aggressive manner still wielding the knife," police said in a statement. "As a result of this action, an officer discharged his weapon fatally striking the offender."

The 41-year-old man was pronounced dead in the gangway. The woman was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital for her stab wounds that police said aren't life-threatening.

An independent investigation is underway.
